Overview

Fes is the 3rd largest city in Morocco, with over 1,300,000 inhabitants. It is the spiritual and cultural centre of Morocco, home to the oldest university in the world. Visiting Fes is like going back in time to the Middle Ages in the Arab world. Its huge, maze-like medina is really well preserved — all of it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The city of Fès is made of three parts:

  • Fes-el-Bali (old Fes) — the medina.
  • Fes-el-Jedid (middle Fes) — built in the 13th century by the Merenids.
  • Fes Ville Nouvelle (new Fes) — the modern city.
